anime osts

Anime Soundtracks (that I've heard could be more I suppose) that Sawano Hiroyuki has used Kobayashi Mika on are: Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist), Gundam UC, Guilty Crown, KILL la KILL, Sengoku BASARA & Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan).

Does she sing anything outside of anime? Yes of course she does, I just haven't heard any of it. She does songs for Sawano-san on Dramas as well.

in depth

  1. CRESC∃NT is one of two songs from Sengoku BASARA that introduced me to this combo, making it the top choice. Also features Naoshi Jinbow. It's pretty short running only 2:43 (2:41 depending on the version) long. But the epicness of the song as well as of the series (or possibly the crackness of it) is represented well here. Rock music for a period piece? fits perfectly fine.

  2. βιoζ from Guilty Crown features a German/English mix. Sawano has released 4 versions of this song: βιoζ, βιοζ-δ, βios <MK+nZk Version> & 美♂-K+$タすpAd. All 4 version are equally beautiful and deserving of being listened to. So do not think you can get away with just one of them, you'll be missing out. The original is by far the best. The 2nd being the melancholy ballad version, slower & shorter because of it. The 3rd version: MK+nZk introduces a different combination of music instruments this is the one heard at the end of episode 19 of the series. And finally 美♂-K+$タすpAd is the piano version.

  3. Me & Creed from Ao no Exorcist is in English, but don't worry it works. Kobayashi's voice is perfectly fit for all kinds of music styles. 3 versions of this one. First one drums & guitars, powerful sounding and very fitting for the series; the 2nd one: Me & Creed <Lite-Tone-Happy部 3:な> as the title states is more upbeat and happy sounding. Lighter then the heaviness or weight on Rin's shoulders. Bold piano. And the 3rd: Me & Creed <Slow Ver> sadder, slower, light piano and soft voice wash over us this time. Goes off almost as if the song is over about the 2:45 mark and then Kobayashi comes back louder and with heavier piano to back her up (that would be Sawano-san on piano btw).

  4. Before my body is dry from KILL la KILL is my current 'on repeat' track. My crack song, I guess. But I don't feel guilty that I love it. Two versions of this one have been released so far. The 2nd one: [nZk] ver. (click for lyrics) is slower, and doesn't have the rap bits by David Whitaker. It's been featured in episode 13 during a fight just before Ryuuko loses Senketsu minus the scarf part. This battle was important, her first time wearing Senketsu after she lost control. So the feelings were well in focus for this version. The Original version (click for lyrics) plays during the climax of Ryuuko's battles.

  5. t’[ae]ck 0N tαitn from Shingeki no Kyojin Kobayashi-san doesn't start singing until about the 2:04 mark of the 4:17 minute song but she makes it perfect. Once again this one is in German. 7 lines in total with that epic sound that Sawano-san is known for.
