When Zed left Kalm he left behind his mother, Sarah (or we were lead to beleive that), who didn't appear to be all there, as it were. While in Kalm he often mentioned how he wanted to be free. Within Kalm there was no wind. Zed often was in trouble for breaking doors around the city. While running from cops he stumbles upon a portal with wind, that takes him to Tempura. There he meets Jiko and his disciple Roia. Ziko gives Zed a red blade that requires three Shards to activate it. Zed, however is unable at this time to control his Spirit Amil Gaul. After meeting Rebecca and going to Jimoto to help her, he acquires another Spirit, Ramvos (the soul of power), even though Ramvos is less powerful then Amil Gaul, he still holds his own. Zed is easily able to defeat Dumas in an attempt to save Rebecca.
Not completely sure if Zed's clued into the fact that he may be in love with Roia or not, but he does know that he needs to protect her, no matter the cost.
